ACRO Ghana - Your trusted choice for Childcare
Mmofra Kyèfa Playgrounds

Issue

This project focuses on advice and support of providing recreational grounds for children and youth in the communities to enable them to exercise and enjoy themselves at the same time. With the exception of few schools which have recreational facilities and where children meet to play during school sessions, children have nowhere else to play. There is virtually not a single playground for kids in any of the communities we operate.

Objectives

This project seeks to highlight the importance of having playgrounds for children. Mother Theresa said that “we can do no great things, only small things with great Love”. In this project, we want children to learn that they are loved and not neglected and that they also belong to the society their parents live in. Besides, by providing playgrounds and encouraging physical activity, the focus is on eradicating the prevalence of childhood obesity by getting kids out to play. In the early stages of the children’s development, we also try to inculcate them values such as belonging, participating andsharing.

Use of sport
In order to help the kids overcome obstacles in life, we use the following sports in this project: Table Tennis, Football, Basket Ball, Cycling, Gymnastics, and other recreational activities.

The benefits to the kids and community at large are:

  • To be prepared to contribute, create and share their innovations with others,
  • To encourage Team work by playing in groups,
  • Parents have the opportunity to meet and share experiences of their children’s development,
  • Children find friends who are not in their immediate vicinity,
  • Communal involvement in creating out of available resources to improve standard of living, in this case for the children,
  • Kids have the chance to become sports men and women when they get interest at early stages of their development,
  • Kids develop self confidence thereby becoming creative,
  • They develop skills such as determination and perseverance.·
  • Play is not just a spare time activity, but also a vital part of growing up, of exercising both the body and the imagination, and of learning about oneself and social interaction.
  • Children incorporate elements of real life into play, and gain confidence in their interactions and emotional control.
  • Play allows children to expand their horizons and learn new behaviour
